Wei Zheng, whose courtesy name was Xuan Cheng, was from Jilu. He was orphaned at a young age and, due to his difficult circumstances, abandoned Confucian studies for Taoism. In the late Sui Dynasty, he joined Li Mi's rebel army. Later, he returned to the Tang Dynasty and served as the Grand Tutor to the Crown Prince. After Emperor Taizong ascended the throne, Wei Zheng was appointed as the Counselor of Advice and enfeoffed as the Duke of Zheng.
Wei Zheng was known for his upright character and often presented candid advice to the emperor. Once, he said to Emperor Taizong, "The ruler is like a boat; the common people are like water. Water can carry a boat, but it can also overturn it." The emperor deeply appreciated this analogy and respected Wei Zheng even more.
One day, Emperor Taizong said to his attendants, "People say that Wei Zheng behaves rudely and disrespectfully, but I find him quite charming." The courtiers all laughed.
